Join Fontana Mercury and Andrew K for an exploration of traditional Irish instrumentation in popular rock music. Less

Major contributors to this genre include Milton Brown, Bob Wills, Spade Cooley, and Hank Thompson, not to mention many others. Considered by some critics to be "less refined" than the popular jazz music emanating from New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and other large metropolitan cities, Western swing nonetheless featured dazzling musicianship and irresistible rhythms. In fact, Western swing forever influenced honky-tonk, rockabilly, and country rock music, popularizing electrically amplified instruments, along with drums, and completely modernizing country music beginning in the late 1940s. From 10am-noon on Friday, February 6, join Jazz Messenger host Brian Keena for another deep dive into the infectious popular music that filled dance halls of Oklahoma and Texas and beyond, while pledging your financial support to the 2026 WTJU Folk Marathon.
