Get in the mood for WTJU’s Rock Marathon… Join us for a special private screening of “Elephant 6 Recording Company.” It’s an inside look at the influential ’90s indie rock collective that launched Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, and more.

“We mashed-up psychedelia and pop and punk and experimentalism. And we had each other to buoy us, so we didn’t need the rest of the world’s approval,” says Robert Schneider, who produced Elephant 6 albums and was the frontman for The Apples in Stereo. Schneider will co-host a 2024 WTJU Rock Marathon show on Sunday, April 21. (Info & schedule)

The 1990s indie rock focus on analog recording wasn’t just about aesthetics. It was also about the community that bonded over DIY recording, handmade cover art, and experimental live performances. Elephant 6 showed that a group of musically inclined weirdos could do something similar in their own towns, too.
