The Rock Spot – Lady Taij Bringing Hip Hop to the Oldies

The average age of the ladies occupying the front row at Fry Springs Beach club music night, was about 69. On sharper days they would have suddenly remembered a colonoscopy appointment rather than attend a concert of rap music.
A colonoscopy at 6pm? The after-hours special? You don’t know about it?
But there they were, not too sure but game for a new experience.
Onto the stage came Lady Taij, accompanied by Miss Conception (Catherine Monnes) on the cello and they proceeded to delight and amaze the assembled crowd. Including the three oldies on the front row.
“Classical cello and hip hop” clapped Valiwag in amazement. “Her words were clear and understandable and right on,” enthused DJ Ama Sparkles, and “no sweary words,” said DJ Annie De Blanco who doesn’t like that sort of thing.
Along with pre-tuned beats and recorded voice to accompany her own voice Lady Taij continued to rock the Beach Club with amazing lyrics, positive messages and boundless joy.
She said she could not stop making rap music even if she wanted to, and that showed in every song. From ‘Black Brilliance’ to ‘How Can I Help you Pack Light?’
The front row ladies were rapt, (ha ha) thrilled to be exposed to something new and wonderful.
The performance at Fry Springs was followed by a set from Devon Sproule who performed many of her newer audience participation songs, including the fabulous G My Bs which, if you are feeling despondent about the state of the nation, is a great tonic.
Lady Taij will be at the Potters Craft Cider on Sunday September 6th from 2-3pm (along with Prints, Platters and Pints and a WTJU vinyl takeover) and at Visible Records on Friday September 11th. Be sure to be there.
