The Classics a Day team honors Robert Schumann’s birthday (June 8, 1810). The theme for June is Schumann and his circle. During the month, you’re encouraged to share works written by Schumann, his friends, his colleagues, his rivals — and of course, his wife. Here are my #ClassicsaDay selections for the third week of #SchumannsCircle. […]

    Apr 23rd, 2021 | By Ralph Graves
Tags: #ClassicsaDay, #Stokowski, Jean Sibelius, Leopold Stokowski, Paul Lavalle, Robert Schumann, Twitter, Werner Josten

For April 2021, the Classics a Day Team celebrates a legend — Leopold Stokowski. He was born in April (1882) and became a cultural icon. His recording legacy spans over 60 years. And whether he was conducting a premier orchestra or a group of studio musicians, the sound was unmistakable. To share all of Stokowski’s […]

  • #ClassicsaDay #ClassicalAutumn Week 5

    Nov 1st, 2019 | By Ralph Graves
Tags: #ClassicalAutumn, #ClassicsaDay, Cécile Chaminade, Edward MacDowell, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Twitter

In 2019 the Classics a Day team has been making its way through the seasons. We’ve had Classical Winter (January), Classical Spring (April), and Classical Summer (August). For October, we complete the cycle with Classical Autumn. I tried to steer clear of the really obvious choices (like Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”). In the process, I managed […]

Tags: #ClassicalSummer, #ClassicsaDay, Benjamin Britten, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Robert Schumann, Samuel Barber, Thomas Campion, Twitter

It was a busy summer for the Classics a Day team. In June, we marked African-American Music Appreciation Month. In July we celebrated national holidays in the U.S. and  Canada. So that just left August to have a summer theme. For my part, I chose to choose anything except Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” In the process, […]

  • Charlottesville Symphony Season Ends Energetically

The final concert of the Charlottesville Symphony’s 2018-19 season started slowly and finished in triumph. It was quite a journey. The Saturday, April 24th concerto opened with Wagner’s Prelude from “Parsifal.” This is a quiet, introspective work that uses silence as an important element. The orchestra played beautifully, achieving a shimmering quality in some passages. […]

Robert Schumann was born on June 8, 1810. Some of us contributing to the #ClassicsaDay feed decided to celebrate that birthday. For the month of June, we encouraged folks to post works by Schumann and his circle. Schumann worked with several major composers of the day. He also reviewed up-and-coming composers in his magazine. Here […]
