Golson played with a who’s who of jazz luminaries including Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey before launching his solo career and co-leading the Jazztet with Aft Farmer. He’s known for a big tenor sound, but he is best remembered for composing so many tunes that became jazz standards. Celebrate the career and life of this great NEA Jazz Master. Less

For the series, albums are chosen and produced by Joe Harley of Music Matters and are mastered for vinyl by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. In our two hours together, we’ll explore some of my favorites from the series. They may become some of your favorites too. Less

Many jazz… MoreRonnell Bright was a great pianist and a wonderful accompanist who backed a number of great singers, including Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson, Anita O'Day and others. Many jazz fans may remember him as the pianist behind Sarah Vaughan on two of her classic late 1950s albums, After Hours At The London House & No Count Sarah.Bright was a wonderful composer as well. One of his compositions, Cherry Blossom, appears on fellow pianist Horace Silver's album The Tokyo Blues. The inclusion of that tune stands out as the only tune on that album not composed by Horace Silver himself, one of the all time great composers. In addition to his own albums, Bright recorded with Coleman Hawkins, Buddy Tate, Johnny Pate, Shirley Scott, Frank Wess & Harry "Sweets" Edison and others. Unfortunately, during his later years, Bright faded into comparative obscurity, unfairly so. However we take this opportunity to revisit some of the music of Ronnell Bright, from both his own sessions and his collaborations with other great artists. Less

He has travelled to Cuba many times, recorded with top players there and he popularized this vibrant music inIceland where he leads a ripping Cuban big band. Less
