Offstage, On-Air with Molly Joyce, Oct 9

By WTJU

Offstage, On-Air is a weekly show highlighting central Virginia’s vibrant classical music community. Each week you’ll hear conversations with local classical musicians, learn about upcoming concerts, and enjoy artist-curated playlists. Tune in Sunday from noon to 1:00pm here on WTJU (91.1 FM and streaming at wtju.net).

This week’s guest will be Molly Joyce, a composer and performer whose work focuses on disability as a creative source. She’s been called one of the “most versatile, prolific and intriguing composers working under the vast new-music dome” by The Washington Post. Joyce is a Dean’s Doctoral Fellow in the Composition and Computer Music program at the University of Virginia. On October 28, New Amsterdam Records will release her latest solo album, Perspective.

At the age of seven, Joyce’s left hand was nearly amputated in a car accident. After two decades of rejecting the label, Joyce now proudly identifies as disabled, using her impaired left hand to play her vintage toy organ, an instrument seemingly custom-built for her impairment. On Perspective, Joyce moves beyond her own disability to highlight voices of the wider disabled community—both literally and figuratively.
