Offstage, On-Air with Tim Summers, September 4

Offstage, On-Air is a weekly show highlighting central Virginia’s vibrant classical music community. Each week you’ll hear conversations with local classical musicians, learn about upcoming concerts, and enjoy artist-curated playlists. Tune in Sunday from noon to 1:00pm here on WTJU. The program’s first guest on September 4 will be violinist Tim Summers, Co-Director of the Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival.
Each fall, the Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival brings an extraordinary group of international performers to town for two weeks of joyous and far-ranging chamber music. Running from September 6-18, this year’s festival includes a four-concert chamber music series, a free community concert at The Paramount, a special concert and dinner at King Family Vineyards, and a brand-new VR experience that lets audience members step inside a performance of Mozart’s String Quintet No. 4 in G minor.

The two founders and artistic directors of the festival, Tim Summers and Raphael Bell, grew up in Charlottesville and studied at Julliard—Tim for violin, Raph for cello. They both make their home in Europe, where Tim performs in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Raph in the Antewerp Symphony Orchestra. For the past 23 years they have co-directed the Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival.

As an audience member, the juxtapositions and connections the festival programming draws between seemingly disparate works can be exhilarating and illuminating. The approach to programming that Tim and Raph take is both intellectual and personal. The music ranges from ancient to brand-new, and they are always deeply attuned to the special magic that is only possible with live performance.

WTJU Classical Director Brian Simalchik will speak with Tim Summers about the musical highlights of this year’s festival, as well as the performers and ideas that audience members can expect to enjoy and engage with over the course of the festival’s duration.
