Meet Media Producer, Michael Moxham

Michael Moxham joined WTJU as an official staff member in early 2026 in a shared job position with Robertson Media Center. We are so happy to have Michael’s technical expertise and positive attitude in the workplace. Michael had a birthday on July 25; we wish him a happy belated birthday, while sharing a brief Q&A below. Recently a couple of us joined Michael on a tour of the Robertson Media Center, where he showed us some aspects of his job on Grounds, like digitizing archival media, transcribing podcasts, running sound for live acts, and conducting workshops.
Tell us a bit about your title and tasks at WTJU and RMC.
I am a media producer at WTJU which generally means I produce podcasts and help others produce podcasts. I also perform some additional jobs such as producing PSA’s and other radio spots, fix technical issues with equipment from time to time, etc.
At the RMC I host workshops aimed at helping students, faculty, and staff produce better quality audio content, teach others how to use audio equipment, and help manage inventory. I also set up and run sound for events occasionally.
When did you start working at WTJU?
I started working in this position in late Feb of this year (2026) But I previously did technical work for WTJU in 2018 – 2021, or so. I helped with the move from Lambeth and did all the wiring and setting up of equipment in the studios, as well as setting up the Audio Over Internet Protocol network that connects all the equipment and studios.
What drew you to working at the station?
At first it was a complex audio systems challenge, but the community brought me back.
What do you love about WTJU?
I love the community, and the unique nature of everything. It’s like a series of one time events.
What do you love about your position?
I love the flexibility, and the ever changing nature of my work. Mostly I love the people and the myriad opportunities to walk on grounds.
Do you have any situations or projects working with the community at large (or within WTJU) that stand out as favorites?
I can’t pick just one. It’s all my favorite!
What is your biggest gaffe in your current position?
I mislabeled and incorrectly dated some files once, causing them to not play at the correct time. I can be forgetful. So I make a lot of lists and alarms.
What are your personal favorite songs, artists, and musical genres?
I love the music of certain cartoon shows (Adventure time, Steven universe), quirky beat based music like Quickly, Quickly, and I really enjoy classical music in the morning.
Do you have any favorite podcasts?
Tonebenders is pretty good. I don’t listen to podcasts often. Mostly audio books.
What is your dream audio project, whether podcast recording or music production?
I would like to be the lead sound designer on a Cartoon series, or Sci Fi series or film.
Tell us more about your personal projects as a musician and producer.
I produce and record/mix music for musicians all over the world. I am currently working with some artists here in Charlottesville including Dr. A.D. Carson and Eli Cook. I really love collaborating on new ideas and boundary pushing projects like the Ix Art Park Looking Glass or the Unsettling Grounds app, which is an AR exhibit at Woolen Mills accessed through a mobile app.
What are your passions outside of your job?
My children, acting, cars, coffee, watching cartoons and super hero movies
