Brian, AKA Reality Star, is co-host and founder of late-night WTJU Rock program, Electronic Explorations (Saturdays, 1 – 3 a.m.). He’ll be handing the mantle over to a new co-host this summer when he moves out of state. Bid Brian adieu at this Third Rail performance, while also thanking him for the talent he has brought to WTJU and the community!
Brian Lindgren will present an hour-long solo set for the EV, a digital-acoustic string instrument of his own design. Part electronic viola, part computer, the EV is what Popular Science called “a computer disguised as fine lutherie.” It pairs the gestural nuance of bowed string playing with real-time digital synthesis, neural-network AI, and immersive spatial sound. Each motion of the bow draws out a filament of sound to be wound, crossed, and interlaced into shifting sonic tapestries.
Across roughly 50 minutes, Lindgren explores the singular sound-world opened up by the instrument’s digital-acoustic architecture: textures caught and frozen mid-air, timbres that sit between the familiar and the altered, and music drawn from the margins of digital systems, the unstable traces and quiet ambiguities that machines are built to ignore, here coaxed into audible space. The result is a continuously evolving landscape where gesture, synthesis, and the acoustic body of the strings resonate as one.
