The Maldives, a nation of coral atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean, has a strong oral storytelling culture, and this narrative sensibility runs through Umaisha’s work.

They released their debut album, Songs of Stolen Children, in early 2026, combining folk traditions with modern, electronic elements to amplify voices of loss and resilience.
9. "Lamentation" - Kronos Quartet - Forgive Us For [Phenotypic: 2026]
   Notes: ‘Forgive Us For’ captures Kronos Quartet at its most urgent and human. Journeying through Palestine, Iceland, and Ukraine, the album amplifies voices of mercy, exile, and survival in works by Rim Banna, Hildur Guðnadóttir, and Mariana Sadovska. Each composition transforms personal and collective trauma into transcendent sound, affirming that music can both bear witness and heal.
10. "Guernica Jigsaw" - L.Y.R. - Dark Sky Reservation [Real World: 2026]
    Notes: The musical project of UK poet laureate Simon Armitage, producer and multi-instrumentalist Patrick J. Pearson and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Richard Walters, what began as a creative correspondence experiment, once described as a ‘genre-splicing supergroup’, has gone on to become a much loved, highly prolific and very real-life band.

The group began as a trio with guitarists Louis Henry and Robin Rees, joined by percussionist Thanas Kas, who met through their shared connection to Jazz.

    Notes: The Namib desert is the oldest in the world. Therefore, the driest. We were headed to the far northwest, a mountainous region, “the place where you can see the rain,” in reference to the moisture that so rarely graces the land. As a counterbalance to ethnocentric cliches, we’d come to record with possibly the most photographed people on earth, the Himba— to listen rather than gaze at them as if on display. To share their voices as a counter to their visual objectification, particularly the inappropriate eroticization of the women who customarily go topless throughout daily life.

    Notes: In January 2022, I began working on a new project with my VESNA colleagues Christian Thomé and Markus Braun. We exchanged ideas, improvised, and explored new sound worlds — rhythms, textures, and melodies rooted in tradition yet open to experimentation. Then, on February 24, 2022, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine — my home country. Everything changed. For a long moment, music felt irrelevant. How could we continue creating while war was unfolding at home? Yet the deeper question was how I could help my people survive. While members of my family and friends joined the defence forces in Ukraine, I became an activist in Germany. Together with fellow artists, we organized fundraisers, supported refugees, coordinated humanitarian aid, and suddenly found ourselves learning about bulletproof vests, night-vision devices, and drone equipment.
