WTJU 91.1 FM

Gambian griot Salieu Suso will stop by WTJU Tuesday afternoon, May 24, at 4 for a live session at The Stage. We are pleased to bring you the event in partnership with the UVA French and Music departments.  This is a special concert to which you are invited to be part of the studio audience.

This is a free event, open to all. Masks are strongly encouraged for all attendees.  You can also listen on the radio (91.1 FM) or on-line, and even video stream it at WTJU’s Facebook page or YouTube channel.  But live music always sound better with you as part of the studio audience.  WTJU is located at 2244 Ivy Rd in Charlottesville, right next door to Vivace.  There is plenty of parking available.

Muhamadou Salieu Suso was born into a West African Gambian family of Mandinka griots, musicians, and storytellers extending back nearly 1,000 years. Suso continues the tradition of these keepers of history. He began training on the 21-string kora with his father, the renowned Alhaji Musa Makang, at eight years old and began a career at age 15. Since then, he has performed throughout Africa and Europe, playing and promoting Gambian music and the kora, before settling in the United States. He is leader of the Jaliya Kafo music ensemble, as well as a leader in the nation’s rapidly growing African music scene.
