Scott Mathis digs into the New Mexico folk sound, August 13
By WTJU
Scott Mathis will stop by WTJU this Friday afternoon, to take the listeners on an exploration of Folk music around New Mexico. Sunset Road is heard Friday afternoons from 4-6 (eastern) at 91.1 FM, streaming at wtju.net,or by asking your smart speaker to “Play WTJU.”
Scott Mathis, a multi-instrumentalist, was born in Ohio, but his family moved to Albuquerque NM (where he still lives), in 1964. His musical interests started early with piano and cello lessons, and in school playing bugle and cornet in drum and bugle corps and marching bands. After military school, he joined several rock and roll bands, then bluegrass, irish, old time, blues and jazz groups.
The idea behind this show is to give examples of music from New Mexico, from one of the oldest traditions of Indo-Hispanic music and dance, to the young players who learned from the masters. These recordings are only a part of the wonderful folk music traditions enjoyed and played in New Mexico.
Scott is considered a kind of ‘Johnny Appleseed’ of the music of New Mexico, having helped spread the music far and wide, including having influenced local Charlottesville band Mando Mafia.
