Sunday shines for Charlottesville Classical

Date: 01/22/2023

Sunday shines for Classical music on WTJU. It begins with early music at 6am, and wraps up 7pm with two hours of chamber music.
Below are a few highlights for January 22:

Offstage, On-Air is a weekly show highlighting central Virginia’s vibrant classical music community. Each week you’ll hear conversations with local classical musicians, learn about upcoming concerts, and enjoy artist-curated playlists. Tune in Sunday from noon to 1:00pm here on WTJU (91.1 FM and streaming at wtju.net). This week’s guest David McCormick, a multi-instrumentalist, scholar, educator and arts administrator.

David is Executive Director of Early Music America, Artistic Director of the Early Music Access Project based in Charlottesville, and a founding member of Alkemie, a New York-based medieval music ensemble. We’ll highlight Early Music Access Project’s February 13 and 14 concerts, called “Winter Songs & Stories,” which will be performed in both Charlottesville and Staunton.

Catch Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” this Sunday, January 22nd from 3-6pm with Ann Shaffer.

Then, on January 29th, listen to “Carlo il Calvo” with host Brendan O’Donnell.

Sunday Opera Matinee is the only non-syndicated weekly broadcast of opera in Central Virginia coming to you year round, regardless of the season!

You can listen to the last two shows in our public archive.

WTJU is pleased to announce the latest addition to its classical programming lineup: “Heifetz On Air,” airing Sundays 6 – 7 p.m. on 91.1 FM and streaming at WTJU.net and CharlottesvilleClassical.org.

Each week, “Heifetz On Air” presents captivating performances by Heifetz International Music Institute students, alums, and faculty — recorded on stage in Staunton and in WTJU’s Charlottesville studios. The show is hosted by Benjamin K. Roe, president and CEO of Heifetz Institute and longtime veteran of public radio classical programming.

Weekly episodes of “Heifetz On Air” will often follow a seasonal theme.
