SPICMACAY at UVA on Lambeth Live, Apr 6

Members of The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth at The University of Virginia (SPICMACAY at UVA) will put on the April 6 edition of Lambeth Live (heard each Friday night from 8-9 on WTJU), and you are invited to be part of the studio audience for this FREE concert broadcast!  You can of course listen to it (91.1 FM around Charlottesville, on-line at wtju.net), or even video stream it at WTJU’s Facebook page, but concerts always sound better with a studio audience!

This week’s concert will take place at Belmont Arts Collaborative, located in Kathy’s Shopping Center at 221 Carlton Road (Belmont Pizza, Found Market).

Arghya Shetty is a senior at Albemarle High School has been learning the North Indian Hindustani classical music under the tutelage of Smt. Nirmal Bajekal, Director, Gandharva School of Music North America. In the past 10 years, she has performed widely and has had the privilege of training briefly under Padma Bhushan Dr. Prabha Atre, an iconic vocalist in this genre. She will be completing her Visharad (bachelor’s degree in Hindustani music) this April.

Megha Ranjani Kalyan was initiated into Carnatic music at the age of 9 by her father and Guru Sri. Raman Kalyan. Under his tutelage, she cultivated a strong interest in the bamboo flute. Megha completed her flute solo debut (Arangetram) in September, 2016. Currently, Megha is a first year at the University of Virginia and plans on studying Biology and Computer Science.

The Garikipati Sisters (Sruthi Garikipati and Sravanthi Garikipati) come from a music-oriented family and started learning Indian Carnatic Music at the age of 4 from father Sri. G.V.Prabhakar, renowned Carnatic & Light music singer as well as a music composer. Later they took guidance under Sri.D.V.Mohana Krishna (Disciple of Dr.Mangalampalli Bala Murali Krishna) in Carnatic Music. With a keen inclination towards Semi-Classical music, sisters obtained special training in Annamacharya Keerthanas from Guru Sri. Garimella Bala Krishna Prasad Garu. They participated in various State and Nation-wide prestigious competitions in India starting at the age of 6 and were fortunate to give many stage performances.
