Muriel Rukeyser once wrote that the universe is made of stories, not atoms. Stories are how we connect the atoms, how we understand one another, how we make a community.

Charlottesville is a diverse community, including immigrants from all over the world. Neighbors who we don’t often hear from in the media. Too rare are the chances to open a window into the lives of these people — to listen and understand.

To that end, WTJU partnered with the Charlottesville office of the International Rescue Committee, which helps refugees from across the world build new lives in our community. For this “Resettled” project, we interviewed 17 IRC clients and produced short form radio pieces that air throughout September 2024 on WTJU 91.1 FM.

Resettled is about giving a platform to those who have survived crises and thrived through their resettlement here in Charlottesville. We hope our listeners might reflect on the strength and perseverance of their fellow community members. And we hope that the richness of their words and their voices stands as a reminder of the humanity that connects us in an atomized world.

We’ll post the stories here in the near future.
