Over the course of Allen's recording career, he defined the Afrobeat sound, meshing Funk & Jazz influences with Nigerian Highlife to create a cross-cultural dialogue that has gone global.

6. Sahkopaimen - Hamara - "Hamynen"
   Notes: Folk music from the twilight zone. Hämärä (Finnish for dusk or twilight) is a toned moment between light and shadow, new and old. Hämärä is momentary and transformative, it is a magical moment of transition and danger where anything can happen. It is apt to describe Sähköpaimen's modern folk music, where the oldest tradition meets modern technology and improvisation smashes into the beat.
7. Sheila Chandra - Weaving My Ancestors' Voices - "Speaking In Tongues II"
   Notes: Sheila Savithri Elizabeth Chandra is a retired English pop singer of Indian descent. She is no longer able to perform, as the result of Burning Mouth Syndrome which she has had since 2010. These austerely beautiful records forged a new global vocal vision out of a re-imagining of myriad vocal traditions - and sound just as radical and passionate now, as they did when they were first released, 30 years ago.

    Notes: My Heart Speaks, the new album from Brazilian legend Ivan Lins, is out September 15, 2023 via Resonance Records. The album features Lins - in intense performances of songs he hand-picked - with jazz vocal icons Dianne Reeves and Jane Monheit, rising star singer Tawanda and trumpet great Randy Brecker, along with the 91-member Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra. Lins's core band on this album features pianist Josh Nelson, guitarist Leo Amuedo and bassist Carlitos Del Puerto.

    Notes: Born of the centuries-long interaction between ritual practices of indigenous Guaraní and the Baroque music influences brought by Jesuits in the Mission period, Argentina's chamamé can be conceived of as a ritual that seeks to communicate with the Earth and the Universe and maintain harmony among humans, through music and dance that lead participants to moments of ecstatic trance.
16. Captain Planet - Sounds Like Home - "Hammock Dreams"
    Notes: Taking a turn toward the more organic, retro sounds of artists who originally inspired him as a young musician, Charlie Wilder (aka Captain Planet) flexed his composer and bandleader muscles- incorporating horn sections, strings, and acoustic drums more than the big club focused electronic sounds he has often come to be known for.
