Opera in the Park: An enchanted evening

By WTJU

violinsOn Wednesday evening, July 22, WTJU hosted a marvelous open-air concert at the Ix Art Park in downtown Charlottesville. Several hundred people enjoyed a truly delightful evening of enchanting music from a string duo and from the performers of the Ash Lawn Opera.

We heard works by Mozart, Delibes, Puccini and others.  The program featured enchanting renditions of “O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi and “Duo des fleurs/Sous le dôme épais” from Lakmé.  Several selections from Ash Lawn’s upcoming production of My Fair Lady and other musicals added a lovely light-hearted feel to the evening – and many of the audience joined in the singing!.

kevin-marthaWe offer a huge thank you to everyone who helped – our good friends, Kevin O’Halloran (Executive Director) and Martha Redinger (President) of Ash Lawn Opera ….

…. to all the performers and organizers, those who put everything together, the folks who served food and drinks, those who ran the concessions and the sound.   And special thanks also to our own Tim Snider, Ann Shaffer and Allen Hench, hosts of WTJU’s Sunday Opera Matinee, for being such excellent presenters.

Thankfully, the weather was really perfect – dry and pleasant with low humidity.  I hope we’ll do it again sometime.

Many thanks again to all!  And many thanks to our wonderful listeners for coming out to support WTJU.
