Offstage, On-Air with Jiyeon Choi, September 25

Offstage, On-Air is a weekly show highlighting central Virginia’s vibrant classical music community. Each week you’ll hear conversations with local classical musicians, learn about upcoming concerts, and enjoy artist-curated playlists. Tune in Sunday from noon to 1:00pm here on WTJU (91.1 FM and streaming at wtju.net).

This week’s guest will be Jiyeon Choi, Lecturer in Clarinet at UVA, Principal Clarinet with the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia, and Director of the UVA Chamber Music Series. Jiyeon will talk with Brian Simalchik about the exciting plans in place for the 2022-23 UVA Chamber Music Series, and share recordings by UVA performance faculty members.

This annual series of six concerts features UVA performance faculty and Symphony principals playing chamber music in an intimate setting. This season opens and closes with concerts featuring many performers sharing a wide variety of chamber music repertoire. The middle four concerts of the season feature one UVA faculty member each: Cody Halquist, horn; Jiyeon Choi, clarinet; Nathaniel Lee, trombone; and I-Jen Fang, percussion. Each UVA Chamber Music Series concert takes place on Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm in beautiful Old Cabell Hall.

The series kicks off on Sunday, October 9, with a concert featuring eight UVA faculty members performing music by Randall Thompson, Maurice Wright, Ingrid Stolzell and Malcolm Arnold.

Tickets to individual concerts, as well as a series subscription, are available through the UVA Arts Box Office.
