Offstage On-Air interviews Brian Lindgren, developer of the Electronic Viola

By WTJU

Date: 08/02/2026

Time: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

This week we have an all new Offstage, On-Air featuring Brian Lindgren, composer, technologist, violist, and former WTJU host of Electronic Explorations. In 2026 Brian completed UVA’s PhD program in Music Composition and Computer Technologies.

Brian Lindgren is the developer the EV, a digital-acoustic string instrument, part electronic viola, part computer. It pairs the gestural nuance of bowed string playing with real-time digital synthesis, neural network of AI, and immersive spatial sound. Each motion of the bow draws out a filament of sound to be wound, crossed, and interlaced into shifting sonic tapestries.

Before moving out of state, Brian played a farewell concert as part of the Third Rail music series. Watch that concert on WTJU’s YouTube channel.

Listen to Offstage, On-Air every Sunday in on 91.1FM or stream at wtju.net. You can also listen to the rebroadcast the following Tuesday at 9 p.m. and Friday at 1 p.m. on charlottesvilleclassical.org.
