WTJU is pleased to present YAPs, a new documentary film produced by Victory Hall Opera that follows young opera singers pursuing their dreams in spite of difficult odds.

The screening will take place at WTJU’s Stage (2244 Ivy Rd) on Saturday, December 6 at 5 p.m. Director Miriam Gordon-Stewart will join WTJU General Manager Nathan Moore for a Q&A after the film.

This event is free and open to the public, and it’s a great way to get in the mood for WTJU’s upcoming Classical Marathon.

Widespread closures threaten the very existence of live theater in America. A traditional career as an opera singer seems less and less viable.

And yet: In spite of a system stacked against them, young singers continue to follow their calling, risking everything to gain entry into fiercely competitive apprenticeship programs.

In VHO’s searing, intimate new documentary film, five young opera singers across America share a year of their lives with unprecedented access. What is driving their ambition? Who will “make it”? And what does success even mean to the next generation?
