Claudrena Harold Discusses Her Uncle, Southern Soul Figure, David Crawford

Historian and filmmaker Claudrena Harold will be joining Andrew Kahrl on Ye Olde Tuesday Afternoon Rocke Show to talk about the life and career of her uncle, songwriter and producer David Crawford. Harold is collaborating with filmmaker and UVA professor Kevin Jerome Everson on a short film about Crawford’s life, “Come Out Star”.

David Crawford was an influential figure in shaping Southern Soul music, writing songs for artists such as B.B. King, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Jackie Moore, and Percy Sledge.

Claudrena N. Harold is a professor of African American and African Studies and History who has published multiple books, monographs, and articles including New Negro Politics in the Jim Crow SouthCharlottesville 2017: The Legacy of Race and Inequity, and When Sunday Comes: Gospel Music in the Soul and Hip-Hop Eras. As a part of her ongoing work on the history of black student activism at UVA, she has written, produced, and co-directed with Kevin Everson nine short films.
