Coming up on the next Around This Town, host Ed Griffin will chat with Susan Munson and Holly Renee Allen about their November 8 Neon Angels concert in Staunton. Then in the final hour, national flatpicking guitarist Mark Cosgrove will call in to share details about his band’s November 7 concert at the Front Porch. Around This Town airs Tuesday afternoon from 4-6 (eastern) at 91.1FM, online at wtju.net, and on the new WTJU app.
The Neon Angels is a collective of female Americana singer-songwriters from the Charlottesville, VA, area. Co-founded by Holly Renee Allen and Susan Munson, the group organizes “songwriter-in-the-round” events that highlight women’s voices in the regional music scene.
The collective began as a festival to honor and promote women in the Southeast’s Americana music scene, with events featuring multiple musicians sharing original songs and stories in an intimate, round-table-style performance. In addition to co-founders Holly Renee Allen and Susan Munson, other Blue Ridge area musicians have performed with the Neon Angels, including Blair Jones, Molly Murphy, Jen Tal, and Julia Catherine.
Quite simply, Good Medicine, delivers. An exciting and seasoned singer and bandleader, Mark Cosgrove takes a backseat to no one when it comes to putting on a show that pleases any crowd. Cosgrove, winner of the coveted National Flatpick Championship as well as The Doc Watson Guitar Championship, along with monster fiddler Nate Grower have performed in front of countless audiences as soloists in The David Bromberg Quintet and Big Band. With the bottom end covered by veteran bass player and new acoustic music pioneer Larry Cohen, co-founder of the legendary Tony Trischka and Skyline, and the brilliant high harmony singing and rhythm guitar of Peter Lorch, this band has chops and experience in spades.
