The Silver Screen Soundtrack Hour: Max Steiner
Max Steiner (1888-1971) composed the music for over 300 films, winning three Academy Awards along the way. But if he’d stopped at one, he’d still be remembered. Prior to King Kong (1933), the role of music in “talkies” was uncertain. Afterwards, it was clear that a film soundtrack should be an integral part of the movie, with identifiable leitmotifs for major characters, moods, and concepts. It was a Wagnerian approach, and one that worked.
