Composer Crossover
While it can be tempting to pigeonhole composers, there’s a long history of composers who’ve excelled at creating works for both the concert stage and the cinema.
Many of the great film composers of Hollywood’s Golden Age hailed from the European tradition and were successful composers for the concert stage before making the move to Hollywood, among them Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner, but other composers moved back and forth between the two genres throughout their career.
On this week’s edition of The Silver Screen Soundtrack Hour we’ll dive into the world of composers who created notable works for stage and screen. We’ll enjoy selections from Aaron Copland’s score for The Red Pony (1949), Ralph Vaughan William’s music for 49th Parallel (1941), plus works from Shostakovich, Prokofiev, William Walton, and more.
