Grammy nominee Joe Troop is on Borrowed Time, August 20

Grammy nominee Joe Troop (Che Apalache) will stop by Sunset Road this Friday afternoon, August 20, at 4 (edt) to go track by track through his debut solo release, Borrowed Time, out that day on Free Dirt Records.  Sunset Road is heard Friday afternoons from 4-6 (edt) at 91.1 FM, streaming at wtju.net, or by asking your smart speaker to “Play WTJU.”Joe Troop is a founding member and leader of Che Apalache, the bluegrass-infused international band with members from the USA, Argentina and Mexico, who were nominated for a Grammy for their latest CD, which was produced by Bèla Fleck. Che Apalache had just embarked on a major US tour when the pandemic hit, and Joe’s bandmates barely made it back to their home countries as their entire tour collapsed. Forced to change direction, Joe channeled his energy into combining his music with direct action, pushing to get out the vote in his home state of NC and the American South in last year’s pivotal presidential election.

Joe also channeled his energy into his first solo CD, ‘Borrowed Time’, out on friday on Free Dirt Records, with heavy hitting guest appearances by Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn, Tim O’Brien, and jazz guitar luminary Charlie Hunter amongst others. The CD has powerful songwriting designed to push listeners out of their comfort zone with the kind of content that got Pete Seeger blacklisted. Joe is no stranger to controversy, having been chased off the stage and threatened for his radical songs, but he wouldn’t, or couldn’t have it any other way as an openly gay man playing bluegrass in the South.
