SPICMACAY at UVA on Lambeth Live, March 31

Three members of SPICMACAY at UVA will put on the March 31 edition of Lambeth Live (heard each Friday night from 8-9 on WTJU), and you are invited to be part of the studio audience for this FREE concert broadcast!

350 Emmet St N, Charlottesville on ye olde GPS will get you to the large lot (do NOT use Lambeth Lane or Google Maps). WTJU is located between JPJ Arena and University Ave. Just park in the lower lot, and head up the stairs. WTJU is on the second floor on the central building.

For those unable to be part of the studio audience for this FREE concert, you can also listen around Charlottesville at 91.1 FM, 102.9 FM in the Richmond area, and on-line at wtju.net.  If you happen to use Facebook, we will also video stream it at WTJU.

Ashwin SPICMACAYAshwin is an 11th grader at Albemarle High School, and he will be singing several songs in the Carnatic genre of music from southern India. Ashwin has been trained in classical Carnatic music for the past 8 years and his current teacher is Chitra Ravindran from Richmond.  Ashwin has also been playing tabla for the past 8 years and his current teacher is Mayuresh Abhyankar.  When he gets the time, he likes to play the harmonium and sing bhajans.

Sravanthi SPICMACAYSravanthi was born and raised in a music family and have been learning Carnatic music since the age of 4 from her father Sri G.V.Prabhakar and direct disciple of Sri Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna, Sri D.V.Mohana Krishna.

She has participated and won number of nationwide competitions in India starting at the age of 6. She has performed over 50 concerts in various genres of Indian music. In her free time Sravanthi likes to compose and teach music.

Neha SPICMACAYNeha Kulkarni is a first year at University of Virginia studying Systems Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Neha will be singing several songs in the Hindustani genre of music, which originates from Northern India. As a young child, Neha took Hindustani classical music lessons and still deeply enjoy listening and practicing on my own. Some of Neha’s favorite classical artists include Kaushiki Chakraborty and Sanjeev Abhyankar.

SPICMACAY LogoThe Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY) is a nonpolitical, voluntary youth movement which promotes intangible aspects of Indian cultural heritage by promoting Indian classical music, classical dance, folk music, yoga, meditation, crafts, and other aspects of Indian culture. The organization seeks to foster traditional Indian values and to generate awareness of the cultural traditions and heritage of India. In order to achieve its goals, SPICMACAY organizes concerts, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, informal discussions, and talks by eminent scholars and thinkers. SPICMACAY at UVA, established in 1990, is one of only 10 chapters in the United States. In the past 25 years, the chapter has organized scores of events featuring leading artists all of whom are preeminent in their fields. SPICMACAY at UVA also promotes talented students and community members by providing a platform for artists to present their work.The organization has flourished over the years through the service of dedicated student volunteers, staff, faculty, and generous contributions and support from the Charlottesville community. Events bring hundreds of attendees from all walks of life together to experience the beauty and richness of Indian art forms. SPICMACAY’s next event is Indian Classical Night, which will take place on April 8th in McLeod Hall Auditorium in the Nursing School.
