Founded in 2006 in Brooklyn by the members of the band Woods, Woodsist Records has been putting out great lo-fi, psych, and folk releases ever since. The label has amassed a collection of 7”s and LPs released largely by bands from Brooklyn and the San Francisco garage scene. Join us for two hours of the weird and the wonderful. You'll hear psych/drone from Sun Araw, freak folk from founders Woods, garage from the Fresh & Onlys, Sic Alps, and Thee Oh Sees, psychedelic noise-pop from Crystal Stilts, and more, including Kurt Vile, Real Estate, Ducktails, White Fence, Matt Valentine, Moon Duo and others.

Before the days of cutting himself with glass onstage, Iggy Pop was the drummer in a surfy instrumental band playing covers of songs like "Louie Louie" and "Twist & Shout." Bob Seger led a glorious organ-powered 60s garage group prior to becoming the king of 70s schlock rock. Formulaically, folk punk is punk music with folk instruments. Musically, it's a genre full of drugs, heartbreak, and anarchy. Join DJ Ceebs with special guest DJ Bearwave.

Mystery Sea

Ambient music from Belgium? Since 2001, the Mystery Sea label out of Brussels has been producing limited edition music based on the various composer's experiences with water. Join Timothy for three hours of the best of Mystery music as he navigates these endless and ever deeper Seas.

San Francisco Sound 1965-69

The San Francisco Sound from 1966 to 1969 was an exhilarating mix of black and white blues, folk, and several forms of rock; from psychedelic to rockabilly to folk rock and the British scene. Fillmore West, Winterland, and the Avalon Ballroom each had their own music turf and followers. FM radio, with its high quality stereo sound, was new and thriving. We will be playing music you would have heard in concert and over the air between '66 and '69.

Super Infinity - Boredoms + Related Projects

Hear the sounds of the Boredoms + related projects outta the Land of the Rising Sun. The influential Japanese rock band is at the center of a network of collaborations mostly connected to Osaka, Japan. During these two hours, we'll hear field recordings that Yoshimi made on a mountaintop...draw the connection between John Zorn and the esoteric Oomoto sect...hear snippets of a performance by 77 drummers in Brooklyn (including Lightning Bolt's Brian Chippendale) and so much more. So place your hands on the power tree and get ready.

Smile Sessions Show

In 1966, Brian Wilson produced what he called “a teenage symphony to God.” It became the most famous “lost” album in rock ‘n’ roll history. Last year, Capitol Records finally released those legendary sessions, unleashing a new appreciation for the work that Wilson conceived 45 years ago with cohort Van Dyke Parks and his often-confused (but always sweet-sounding) band. Join Don Harrison and Radio Wowsville as they pay tribute to “Smile” and all of the incredible music that (despite an official non-release) it has influenced over the years. It’s all in support of community radio and your monetary pledge.

Virginia Funk and Soul

Do you know about Little Tommy? How about the Randolph Brothers? Does the mention of Sir Guy make you move like a chicken? It really doesn’t matter because the Virginia Funk and Soul spectacular is going to bring you up in step with the Old Dominion’s great, often obscure, indigenous funk vamps and mournful soul ballads –classic cuts by Mr. Wiggles, Lenis Guess, the Soul Duo and many more ear-bending artists from the ‘60s and ‘70s. It’s the show that will make you ask: “What? That was from Virginia??!!” Yes, Funky Virginia. So don’t touch that dial, Mr. Hackenbush – join Colin and Don from Radio Wowsville, and some very special guests, as they put some pep in your step and some glide in your stride. You’ll want to have the rugs pulled back and the beverages cooled while you make your call to pledge.

15 Years Of Brighten The Corners

Hey! Listen to us! We're on the stereo! Celebrating 15 years of Pavement's 4th LP with a smorgasbord of rarities, live cuts, and original versions of covers the band was playing at the time of the album's release in February 1997.

Disco 12" Exhibition

The 12-inch record has wider spacing between the grooves than a regular vinyl album does and is often played at 45-RPM. The invention of the 12-inch came about as an accident during the Disco era but what happened next was no accident. Join Don Harrison and the Radio Wowsville Stylus Stylists as they not only recount the history of the 12-inch single – it’s influence and its dance club experimenters – but compel you to shake your body to the best disco dance sounds of the mid-to-late ‘70s, everything from the Jacksons to Donna Summer and Sylvester to lesser known wonders such as Gary Toms Empire and Double Exposure. Mirror balls and afro wigs are optional. Boot shaking is assured. It’s all for your monetary pledge to WTJU.

Let's Get Pretentious

Humor us for a moment while we get tragically hip here at WTJU and bring order to the polarizing world of dubstep and its variants for two whole hours. Class is in session and Emcee Vey will be bringing you the facts - differentiating the experimental and polyrhythmic underground of the often mislabeled dubstep genre with its more oppressive bass wobble focused counterpart, "brostep," that you've undoubtedly heard taking fraternities and Michael Bay film trailers by storm! We've listened to the worst of it and filtered out the rubbish, tune in and learn what all the best real dubstep, future garage, and purple music have to offer-- only at 91.1 WTJU!

Classic Crock

OK, so here’s the deal: Every so often, we allow this half-delusional laid-off classic rock DJ named Don Arlo two hours of airtime (usually during the Radio Wowsville show) to “really rock the place” with playlists filled with the likes of Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, Heart, Steve Miller Band and the Guess Who. Why do we do this? Well, Don Arlo’s specialty is playing the “deep cuts” – the stuff you rarely hear on the commercial stations. Maybe that was why he was laid off. And maybe that’s why he’s so perfect for WTJU. So get the Led out and make that call. Support community radio while you still can. There is unrest in the forest, and there is trouble with the trees (FYI: the maples want more sunlight and the oaks ignore their pleas).

Contemporary Retro-Synthesizer Revival / Vintage Synthesizer Vault

In recent years, experimental, noise, and drone musicians have been trading in their grit and attitude for the warm, raw, and sometimes corny sounds of vintage synthesizers; we'll take a closer look at some of the best contemporary retro-synth wizards like Emeralds, Oneohtrix Point Never, Caboladies, James Ferraro, and Keith Fullerton Whitman. The freshest frontier in electronic music just might be a gaze backwards into its dated and thoroughly un-cool past.
After learning about the contemporary practitioners, we'll wrap up the Marathon by journeying back into electronic music's past, discovering the electronic pioneers who reached for the outer limits in the decades between when hippies and academics discovered synthesizers and when New Age made it embarrassing and lame. Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream are obviously the kings of this genre, but we'll also hear from Cluster, Klaus Schulze, Brian Eno, Terry Riley, Isao Tomita, and Wendy Carlos. Now that the internet age is irrevocably upon us, let's all take a moment to remember that space travel was possible even with 1970's technology.
