UVa Jazz Ensemble

The UVA Jazz Ensemble will perform its Fall Concert, Joy to the World: Exuberance! featuring special guest, trumpeter Paul Neebe. Mr. Neebe is the principal trumpet in the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra. He will perform the classic I Remember Clifford, by Benny Golson, and Arturo Sandoval’s Funky Cha-Cha. The evening will feature two super-charged sets of high intensity big band jazz from a UVA Jazz Ensemble infused with a plethora of new talent.

The concert takes its name from an arrangement by D’earth on the Christmas carol, Joy to the World. The title also reflects the ebullient tone of the selections that the band has chosen for the evening, and from their excitement about starting a new era with so many excellent young players. The Jazz Ensemble will be performing new and old big band repertoire featuring Count Basie’s April in Paris and Every Tub, Dizzy Gillespie’s Woody n’ You, Fan it, Janet from Maynard Ferguson, and the innovative Randy Brecker composition, Some Skunk Funk. Also included will be music by John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for students and free for UVA students who reserve in advance. Tickets are available at the Arts Box Office, 434.924.3376. Tickets will also be available in Old Cabell Hall on the night of the show starting at 7pm.
