to benefit the
George Melvin Educational Fund
Saturday July 23, 2011, 5pm - 5am
On Saturday July 23rd, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU-FM present the 2nd annual All Night Jazz Jam for George benefit concert at Fellini’s #9 Restaurant. The George Melvin Educational Fund is named in honor of the beloved late Charlottesville Hammond organ player, pianist and educator, George Melvin. The popular All Night Jazz Jam raises money for the Fund, which in the past year has purchased jazz-related educational materials for elementary schools in the Charlottesville area, and is covering the cost of private music lessons for four needy high school jazz students.
This year’s marathon session begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday the 23rd and runs until 5 a.m. Sunday morning. The many performers donating their time and talents to this year’s Jam include Bob Hallahan, Jeff Decker, Michael Elswick and Jeff Decker, among many others. WTJU will broadcast live from the event between 9 and 11 p.m. There will be a drawing for an original painting of George, and a silent auction will also be held, with many valuable items available for bidding.
Jacie Dunkle, owner of Fellini’s #9, and Alfreda Melvin, George’s widow, will appear on WTJU’s The Jazz Messenger at 11 a.m. Friday morning July 22nd, to talk more about the event.
Tickets allow you to come and go for the entire night, and include free appetizers and other benefits. Advance tickets are available at Fellini’s #9 on the downtown mall. All proceeds go to the George Melvin Educational Fund. For more information visit The Charlottesville Jazz Society, or call Fellini’s at 434 979-4279.
