Orpheus Supertones Uncle Henry's Favorites
Uncle Henry's Favorites, long-time local string band, journeyed northward earlier in January for a joint concert and Battle of the Bands with celebrated Pennsylvania string band, the Orpheus Supertones. At stake was sole possession of the coveted "Sugar in the Gourd Award." A riotous good time was had by all, and both bands played some great traditional music. When the dust settled, however, the judges declared the contest an exact tie, and scheduled a rematch in Charlottesville for this upcoming weekend, Sun. Jan. 24 and both bands will appear this friday Jan 22ndon Sunset Road starting around 6pm.

The Sunday festivities will take place at The Southern, off the Charlottesville downtown mall (formerly the Gravity Lounge), at 2:00 PM, Sunday January 24.

Featured will be fine old-time fiddling, early country songs, excellent banjo picking in the clawhammer and old-time 3-finger styles, and some all-around good-natured competitive spirit. Come and cheer on your local old-time string band and also enjoy some wonderful music from the invaders from Pennsylvania! Don't miss this rare opportunity to support local acoustic music and to hear these two terrific string bands together!

Workshops:

One day prior to the Battle, the Orpheus Supertones will present workshops (at the CFOOT space: 1106 W. Main, St., Charlottesville) on a variety of instruments and styles, so this will be a chance to learn from some of the best:

  • Fiddle/Banjo tunes with Walt Koken and Clare Milliner. Walt, leader of the legendary Highwoods String Band, and Clare, wizard of the fiddle, will present tunes from their CD and upcoming book of traditional American fiddle tunes. All fiddlers and banjoists welcome.
  • Old-Time Singing and Guitar with Pete Peterson and Kellie Allen, featuring songs from their CD "I'll Never Forsake You." (If time allows, Pete will also conduct a mini-workshop on old-time 2- and 3- finger banjo picking, for clawhammer players who are curious about other popular old-time banjo styles. Pete is the grand champion winner at the Charlie Poole Old-Time Banjo contest held in Eden, NC last June.)
  • String Bass with Hilary Dirlam. Hilary is well-known as a fine musician and director of Blue Ridge Old-Time Music Week, Asheville, NC.

The workshops will be held on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 23, at the CFOOT (Charlottesville Friends of Old-Time Music) space, 1106 W. Main, upstairs from the Studio Art Shop. Lunch is included, beginning at 12:15PM, then the workshops from 1PM to 3PM, followed by a jam session with the Orpheus Supertones and Uncle Henry’s Favorites. Please register in advance by emailing Pete Vigour.
