General Manager
Chuck Chuck Taylor (434-924-0885)

Chuck, aka "Uncle Chuck", aka Charles W. Taylor, III was recruited as an on-air volunteer announcer in 1979. He has served as full time General Manger since 1993 and holds an administrative faculty position of "Director' at the University of Virginia.

Chuck was one of the first "70s era community" volunteers at WTJU, the University of Virginia's all-student radio station. Apocryphally, Chuck was pursued by station management in 1979 so that the station could have access to his record collection but in truth "community" listeners were demanding more broadcast hours than students were able to provide due to University "down" times.

In those early days Chuck hosted two programs: an evening jazz show and a Saturday afternoon rock show, "No Footprints" (Bruce Cockburn song title), alternating with "Still" Bill Norton. Around 1981 he moved to a late night timeslot and launched a new show, "From a Whisper to a Scream" (Allen Toussaint song title). In the mid 80s the show moved back to Saturday afternoons.

In December, 1987, "Uncle Chuck" launched the first of ten annual Winter Holiday Children's Shows. This grew into a co-hosting position on the new "Kid & Kaboodle" children's show in October 1992 that continued through May, 1994.

The last airing of From A Whisper to a Scream on September 20, 1997 due to increased responsibilities in his full-time position ended Chuck's on-air hosting, though with occasional special shows over the years.

Chuck's Management History

In 1985 Chuck was elected to the Board of WTJU and into the position of (volunteer) Program Director. He served three terms on the Board (and as Program Director), 1985-87 and 1991-92. In 1992 the University decided that WTJU should have full-time management and after a search conducted by Associate Dean of Students, Ron Stump, Chuck was hired as General Manager in August of 1993 the position he holds to this day.

As is true at many small community and University radio stations he serves as Chief Operator, General Manager, Program Director, and Volunteer Coordinator/Trainer, in addition to University duties as Department Head.

In June, 2008 Chuck was elected to the Board of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters

Business Manager
Jane Jane McDonald (434-243-8884)

Jane came on board as the Business Manager for WTJU in May 1997. Back in the good ol' days, she and Chuck held down the WTJU fort as the only two regular paid staff. With a background in theatre management, promotions, sales, and degrees in Theatre and Psychology, Jane was, of course, particularly suited to becoming an accountant.

Jane learned later that she was actually hired because she said that in addition to Otis Redding, she liked Tom Waits and Carl Orff. For a while Jane wore several hats at the station. She even compiled, hosted, and self-produced "The Arts Report", a weekly calendar of area arts events. Then the university decided to farm out a lot more fiscal responsibility to the individual departments. Happily, two more staff members were hired as, alas, budgets and many courses in accounting principles finally required a concentrated focus on numbers - not an easy task at a station as fun as WTJU! Still, Jane has found time outside of station hours to serve for several years on the Piedmont Council of the Arts Board, and to also perform in local theatre and music productions.

Underwriting Manager
Rob Rob Nowicki (434-243-8831)

Rob Nowicki is WTJU's Underwriting Manager and as such is responsible for the cultivating, acquiring and keeping of corporate, small business and individual underwriting of the station.

As at any small radio station he wears many hats---public relations guy, marketing maven, small animal taxidermist-all for the good of WTJU. Rob has also volunteered on air at WTJU both as a past co-host of the Early Music Show and other special programming.

Office Administrator
Jane & Gayle Gayle Poirier (434-924-0885)

Gayle started at WTJU as a volunteer and moved shortly thereafter to working as a temp during fundraisers, then added a few days a week year-round. Now, almost ten years later, she's WTJU's full-time office manager. Hers is the first face you see when you arrive at WTJU!
