Verbunk live on Folk and Beyond
Live on Folk and Beyond
Thursday, April 24, 2008, 6:05-6:30PM
Host Aer Stephen welcomes Charlottesville's own
for a special Live In-Studio Performance on WTJU.
Verbunk is a core of highly seasoned musicians bonding over a love for gypsy music.
They bring with them a goulash of musical heritages, a caravan of genres from
Gypsy, Klezmer, Irish, old-Time, Rock, Cajun, Jazz and Swing, producing a dynamic
style they call "Modern American Gypsy Music." From traditional Russian songs, to
the haunting 1920s hit "Brother Can You Spare a Dime," to covers by The Beatles,
The Band and The Pogues, the sonic landscape is ever changing and always compelling.
Alex Caton conjures the gypsy spirits on fiddle and vocals; Matty Metcalfe's accordion
solos take off on "treks of their own". Lew Burrus keeps the bass upright and thumping
while Dan Sebring brings it all home on guitar, violin and mandolin. An exciting blend,
for the young and old alike, evocative of campfires, cafes and concupiscent conquest.
You can also catch them at Gravity Lounge on Sunday evening.
